Asst. Prof. Shira Landau Levi, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Shira Landau-Levi is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Her laboratory develops vascularized human organ-on-chip systems that integrate tissue engineering, stem cell biology, microfluidics, and immuno-engineering to study human disease and accelerate therapeutic development.

The lab focuses on understanding how tissue-resident macrophages regulate tissue development, regeneration, inflammation, and disease through interactions with vascular and parenchymal cells. Using advanced human cardiac and multi-organ micro-physiological systems, the group investigates cardiovascular diseases, pregnancy-associated cardiac disorders, and immune-mediated tissue remodeling.

A major research direction of the laboratory is cardio-oncology, with a particular emphasis on the bidirectional communication between the heart and cancer. The lab develops human heart–tumor organ-on-chip platforms to investigate how cardiac injury influences tumor progression, how cancer alters cardiac function, and how immune cells mediate these interactions. These models can also be used to identify therapeutic strategies that simultaneously protect the heart while improving anti-cancer treatment outcomes. Beyond disease modeling, the laboratory develops scalable tissue-engineering and biological manufacturing technologies for drug screening and precision medicine
